Julie Cockburn’s found and altered photographs and paintings retrieve old idealized portraits and reorganize them from once posed self-projections into majestic and sculptural images, picking at nostalgia and meditating on memory.
The unknown ladies of their time are suddenly confined within their seemingly fire-worked scaffoldings.
She plays with traditional portraiture-how we wish to be seen by others-by caging them with color; kaleidoscoping their hazy beauty.
